Textile engineer  Renata Grilo, was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil and currently resides in the Orange County, CA area.

From a young age, Grilo had the privilege of being surrounded by a diverse cultural bloom of colors, textures, nature and architecture. This was the genesis of Rethinktex.

 

At the tender age of 13, she accepted her first job working in one of the largest cotton and denim mills in the world, Tavex. There she observed great minds leading sustainability and textile innovations like never seen before. That was the beginning of her career as a Textile Engineer. Over time, her interest and work evolved to retail, aerospace and medical fields, where Renata consulted for luxury retailers by mentoring on product knowledge and sales, On the textile portion, she has worked with NASA amongst other governmental agencies and big pharmas by developing non textiles and composites.

 

Renata graduated from Faculdade Belas Artes de São Paulo University with a Bachelor Degree in Textile Engineering and Fashion Design. Later she received her Masters in Chemistry from M.I.T. 

 

Her fashion aesthetic has always captured the attention of designers and buyers from top retailers around the world. It is a storytelling of consumer needs, beauty, and elaboration of a craft that mixes different yarns, fibers, printing, dyes, washes, shapes and fit. 

 

With over 16 years in the industry and having worked with the world’s most prestigious brands and designers, Grilo founded, Rethinktex, a consultancy destined to become a resource to retail brands, mills, and wholesalers for activewear, haute couture, ready-to-wear (RTW), and FR & PPE. After one year of consultancy, Renata started working for chemical companies, medical, hospitality and luxury retailers to lead and mentor in diverse roles from Operations, to team management.

When not working as a textile engineer, aerospace or the retail industry, Renata also provides workshops and  and mentoring in these areas.

 

Rethinktex's focus is on the client who is willing to look and experience art and fashion beyond the obvious. Rethinktex represents the coexistence of exclusive fabric, yarns, trims, colors and finished garments with unparalleled insight on textile R&D, fashion design, personal styling, consumer behavior, financial advisory and sourcing strategies. Located in Orange County, CA, Renata Grilo has worked as a trusted fashion designer and textile engineer to many of the world’s top haute couture brands and has plans to introduce her own brand in 2024. She also has a penchant for playing the guitar, swimming, surfing, helping her community through church, spending time with her family, fluffy friend Snoopy the Maltese and appreciating space and physics.
